Marina Logares Jiménez (born in 1976 in Madrid, Spain) is a Spanish mathematician and an activist for LGBT+ rights. She was recognized as one of the 50 most influential LGBT+ people in Spain in 2019.
Her Work as a Mathematician
Marina Logares earned her PhD in Mathematics in 2006 from the Autonomous University of Madrid. After that, she worked at several important research centers. These included the Max Planck Institute in Germany, the University of Oxford in the UK, the University of Porto in Portugal, and the University of Plymouth in the UK.
Currently, she is a visiting professor at the Complutense University of Madrid. Marina Logares specializes in a field of math called geometry. Geometry is the study of shapes, sizes, positions, and properties of space. Her research mainly focuses on algebraic and complex geometry, which are advanced types of geometry. She also studies mathematical physics, which uses math to understand how the universe works. She is especially interested in equations like the Yang–Mills equations.
In 2018, she wrote a book called Las geometrías y otras revoluciones (Geometry and other revolutions). This book tells the story of how the field of geometry has developed over time.
Her Work as an Activist
Marina Logares is well-known for her efforts to help others and make society fairer. She is especially active in supporting the rights and inclusion of the LGBT community in science. LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. Marina Logares is a lesbian, and she works to make sure that all people, including LGBT individuals, are treated fairly and accepted in scientific fields.
When she worked at the University of Plymouth, she was a co-chair of the LGBT co-forum. This group helped support LGBT students and staff. In 2019, a major Spanish newspaper, El Mundo, included her in their list of the 50 most influential LGBT people in Spain. In 2020, she was a main speaker at the LGBT STEMinar in Birmingham, UK. This event brings together LGBT people working in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).
Her Hobbies
Outside of her work, Marina Logares is also very active physically. She holds a 3rd-degree black belt in Taekwondo, which is a Korean martial art. She also has a black belt in Hapkido, another Korean martial art.
