Marina Mohnen (born on October 31, 1978) is a talented German wheelchair basketball player. She is known as a 4.5-point player, which is a way to classify players based on their physical abilities in the sport.

Marina has played for several teams in Germany, including Rhine River Rhinos Wiesbaden. She also played for teams in Italy. She was a key member of the German national team. This team won the European Championship five times: in 2005, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2015. They also finished second in 2013.

The German team, with Marina, earned silver medals at the IWBF World Championship in Birmingham in 2010 and in Toronto in 2014. At the Paralympic Games, Marina won a silver medal in Beijing and Rio. She achieved a gold medal at the London Paralympics.

Her team was named "Team of the Year" in disabled sports in 2008. They received Germany's highest sports award, the Silbernes Lorbeerblatt (Silver Laurel Leaf). They received this award again after winning gold in London and silver in Rio.

Marina's Early Life and Career

Marina Mohnen was born in Bitburg, Germany, on October 31, 1978. She studied economics in college.

Marina started playing regular basketball when she was eleven years old. In 1999, she had a serious knee injury. After this, she began playing wheelchair basketball. She started as a 4.5-point player for her hometown team in Bitburg.

She later moved to different cities like Koblenz, Bonn, and Cologne. She also played in Italy for a while before returning to Cologne. From 2004 to 2009, she played for RSC Köln. She helped this team become very successful.

Joining the German National Team

Marina joined the German national team in 2005. This team went on to win many European Championships. They won in 2005, 2007, 2009, and 2011.

The team also won bronze medals at the World Championships in Amsterdam in 2006. They earned silver medals at the World Championships in Birmingham in 2010.

Paralympic Successes

In September 2008, Marina played in her first Paralympic Games in Beijing. The German team reached the gold medal game but lost to the United States. They proudly took home silver medals.

After the Paralympics, the team was recognized for their amazing performance. They were named the national "Team of the Year." They also received the Silver Laurel Leaf. This is Germany's highest award for sports. Marina was also named Cologne's Sportswoman of the Year for 2008.

Marina was part of the team that won the European Championship for the sixth time in a row in 2011. This win helped them qualify for the 2012 Summer Paralympic Games in London. To get ready, the team traveled to the United States and Australia.

Marina was the captain of the team in London. In the gold medal match, they played against Australia. The German team won 58-44, earning the gold medal! This was Germany's first gold in women's wheelchair basketball since 1984. Marina scored eleven points in that game.

In November 2012, the team received the Silver Laurel Leaf again. They were also named Team of the Year for 2012. Marina's hometown of Bitburg honored her by adding her name to the city's Golden Book.

In July 2013, the German team lost the European Championship to the Netherlands by just one point. They won silver at the World Championships in Toronto in 2014. In 2015, they beat the Netherlands to win their tenth European title. At the 2016 Paralympic Games, they won silver after losing to the United States in the final.
