Political Journey
In 1990, Marinko Čavara joined the Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ BiH). This is a political party in Bosnia and Herzegovina. From 1994 to 1995, he was a Vice-President of this party. In 2002, he became Vice-President again and also led the party in Busovača.
In 1997, Mr. Čavara was chosen to be part of the Busovača Municipal Council. This group helps run the local town. In the year 2000, he was elected to the Assembly of the Central Bosnia Canton. A canton is like a region or state within the country. He kept his position in this Assembly after another election two years later.
Starting in 1996, he worked as a Deputy Minister for Traffic and Connection in the Central Bosnia Canton. In 2001, this ministry was closed. Mr. Čavara then became the Deputy Director for Roads in the Canton, and later the Director. He worked in this role until 2005.

President of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (2015–2023)
After the 2014 general election, Marinko Čavara was chosen to be the president of the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is one of the two main parts of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He started this job on February 9, 2015.
During his time as president, starting in 2019, he did not appoint new judges to the Federal Constitutional Court. This made it difficult for the Court to do its job properly, especially for important decisions. International groups like the European Commission also noted this problem in their yearly reports.
On February 28, 2023, Mr. Čavara's term as president ended. Lidija Bradara took over the role.
Important Actions and Consequences
On June 6, 2022, the United States Department of the Treasury took action regarding Mr. Čavara. He was added to a special list. This meant that his assets (like money or property) could be blocked, and people in the U.S. were generally not allowed to do business with him.
This action was taken because of his refusal to appoint judges to the Federal Constitutional Court. This made it hard for the Court to work and deal with important issues. The U.S. government stated that these actions made it difficult for the government to work properly and affected the well-being of people in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
