Mario Fasino (born July 26, 1920 – died January 17, 2017) was an important Italian politician and journalist. He helped start the Christian Democratic Party in Sicily. He was the President of the region of Sicily from 1969 to 1972. This role is like being the leader of the regional government. Later, he was also the President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly, which is like a regional parliament, from 1974 to 1976. Besides politics, Mario Fasino was a journalist. He led a newspaper called "Voce cattolica" for the Catholic Church in Palermo.
Early Life and Political Beginnings
Mario Fasino was born in 1920 in San Severo, a town in Apulia, Italy. He started his political career in 1951. That year, he was first elected to the Sicilian Regional Assembly. This is the main law-making body for the region of Sicily. He represented an area in Palermo, the capital city of Sicily. Fasino was very popular. He was re-elected to the Sicilian Regional Assembly seven more times during his career.
Leading Sicily
In 1969, Mario Fasino was chosen to be the President of Sicily. This is a very important job, as the President leads the regional government. He was in charge of five different Sicilian governments during his time as President. He served in this role until December 22, 1972.
Two years later, in 1974, Fasino took on another big leadership role. He was elected President of the Sicilian Regional Assembly. This means he was the speaker or head of the regional parliament. He took over from Angelo Bonfiglio. Fasino led the Sicilian Regional Assembly from 1974 until 1976.
Later Career and Legacy
In 1981, Mario Fasino did not win re-election to the Sicilian Regional Assembly. However, he returned to the Assembly in 1983. He was appointed to fill a vacant seat. This happened when Mario D'Acquisto was elected to the national Chamber of Deputies. Fasino decided not to run for re-election in 1986. Even so, he remained an important official within the Sicilian branch of the Christian Democratic Party. He was also appointed to the party's national council.
Later in his life, Fasino became the President of the Centro di studi filologici e linguistici siciliani (CSFLS). This center focuses on studying the Sicilian language and its history. In the 1990s, he was also appointed to the Sicilian Council of Regional Culture. This council helps promote culture in Sicily.
Mario Fasino passed away in Palermo, Sicily, on January 17, 2017. He was 96 years old. His funeral was held at the Santa Maria di Monserrato Church in Palermo.
