Mario Miguel Guerrero Abud (born September 28, 1949 – died July 2, 2023) was a professional baseball player from the Dominican Republic. He played as a shortstop in Major League Baseball (MLB) for four different teams during his eight-year career, from 1973 to 1980.

Mario Guerrero's Baseball Journey

Mario Guerrero started his professional baseball journey when he signed with the New York Yankees in 1968. He spent more than four seasons playing in their minor league teams.

Joining the Boston Red Sox

In June 1972, Mario was sent to the Boston Red Sox. This was part of a trade that brought Sparky Lyle, a future award-winning pitcher, to the Yankees. Mario made it to the Red Sox's main team in 1973. The next spring, after Luis Aparicio retired, Mario became the team's starting shortstop.

Playing for Other Teams

After his time with the Red Sox, Mario was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals in 1975. He played for both the Cardinals and their minor league team, the Tulsa Oilers, that year. In 1976, he was traded again, this time to the California Angels.

Later, in 1978, Mario joined the Oakland Athletics. He played three seasons with them before his contract was bought by the Seattle Mariners. Mario retired from baseball after being released by the Mariners in 1981. In 1989, he briefly played for the Winter Haven Super Sox in a league for older professional players, where he had a good batting average of .315 in 15 games.
