Marion's History

Marion was first planned out in the year 1820. For a while, it was a very important place! From 1820 until 1829, Marion served as the county seat for Cole County. A county seat is like the main town where the local government offices are located. During this time, Cole County was much larger than it is today, even including parts of what later became Moniteau County in 1845.

In 1829, the county seat was moved from Marion to Jefferson City, which is still the capital of Missouri today.

The community of Marion was named after a famous person: Francis Marion. He was an important officer who fought during the Revolutionary War. This war was when the American colonies fought for their independence from Great Britain.

Marion also had its own post office. It first opened in 1823, helping people send and receive mail for many years. The post office stayed open for a long time, finally closing its doors in 1953.
