Marion Township is home to several smaller communities. These areas are called "unincorporated" because they don't have their own separate local government.
Discovering Barnard
Barnard is a small community within Marion Township. It started way back in 1866. At first, about 50 people lived there. The community grew around a sawmill run by Barnard Burns. He also became the first postmaster when a post office opened in 1866. This post office closed in 1881.
The Story of Cherrie
Cherrie was once a small settlement in the township. It grew around a train station in 1892. Cherrie appeared on a map of Charlevoix County in 1911.
Learning About Phelps
Phelps is another unincorporated community in the township. It began with a sawmill and was first known as Ballou's Siding. A post office named Phelps opened in 1900, but it is no longer in use today.

Marion Township covers about 26.52 square miles (68.69 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 25.57 square miles (66.23 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.95 square miles (2.46 square kilometers), is water.
The township has a small coastline along the northeastern part of Lake Charlevoix.

In 2000, there were 1,492 people living in Marion Township. Most of the people were White (95.44%). There were also smaller groups of African American, Native American, Asian, and Pacific Islander residents. About 2.68% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.
Many households (39.1%) had children under 18 living with them. The average household had about 2.76 people. The median age in the township was 37 years old. This means half the people were younger than 37, and half were older.
Education for Students
Most students in Marion Township attend Charlevoix Public Schools. These schools are located north of the township in the city of Charlevoix. A very small part of the southern township is served by Ellsworth Community School. This school is in the village of Ellsworth, which is south of the township.
