Mariposa Battalion facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Mariposa Battalion was a special military group in California. It was part of the California State Militia. This group was formed in 1851 during a time of conflict. Their main goal was to deal with tensions with some Native American groups. These groups included the Ahwahnechee and Chowchillas people. This period of conflict is known as the Mariposa War.

Why the Battalion Was Formed

The Mariposa Battalion was created because of growing conflicts. The local Mariposa County Sheriff, James Burney, was trying to handle the situation. However, his forces were not enough. He asked the Governor John McDougal for help. The Governor then approved the creation of a new military unit. This unit would have about 200 men.

Starting the Mariposa Battalion

The Mariposa Battalion officially started on February 12, 1851. Sheriff Burney was first asked to lead the group as its major. But he had many other duties in Mariposa. So, he turned down the role.

Choosing a Leader

James D. Savage was then chosen to be the major. He was a good choice because he was very skilled at scouting. This meant he was good at exploring and finding paths.

How the Battalion Was Organized

The battalion was split into three smaller groups called companies:

  • Company A had 70 men and was led by John J. Kuykendall.
  • Company B had 72 men and was led by John Boling.
  • Company C had 55 men and was led by William Dill.

Other important officers were also chosen. M. B. Lewis was the Adjutant, who helped with administration. A. Brunson was the surgeon, taking care of health. Vincent Hailor served as the guide, helping them find their way.

Where They Camped

The battalion set up their main camp. It was about two and a half miles from the town of Mariposa. This camp was close to James Savage's Agua Fria trading post.
