Why Mariscal Estigarribia is Important
Mariscal Estigarribia is home to the Dr. Luis María Argaña International Airport. This airport is quite large.
Reports About the Airport
Some news reports have suggested that the airport might be used by the United States military. These reports claim it could help with access to the Triple Frontera area. The Triple Frontera is a special border region where Paraguay, Brazil, and Argentina meet.
In 2005, some US troops arrived in Paraguay. This happened after the Paraguayan government allowed US troops to have diplomatic immunity. This means they would not be subject to local laws while on duty. Hundreds of US military people visit Paraguay each year. However, the US military has said that only a small number of troops (10-20) will be in the country at any one time.
Official Statements
Both the US and Paraguayan governments have said that the US military is not building a permanent base in Mariscal Estigarribia. They explained that US military personnel are there for short visits. These visits are for joint training exercises with the Paraguayan military. These exercises were planned between July 2005 and December 2006. Most of the troops stayed for less than 45 days.
A Brazilian magazine called CartaCapital looked into these claims in 2008. They said that the idea of a US military base there was a conspiracy theory.
Climate and Weather
Mariscal Estigarribia has a mix of two types of climate. It is partly a tropical savanna climate and partly a hot semi-arid climate.
