About Mariska Veres
Her Early Life
Mariska Veres was born in The Hague, a city in the Netherlands. Her father, Lajos Veres, was a Hungarian Romani violinist. Her mother, Maria Ender, had French and Russian family roots.
Starting Her Music Career
Mariska began singing in 1963 with a guitar band called Les Mystères. In 1964, they recorded a small music album (an EP). Mariska sang on two songs: "Summertime" and "Someone."
Over the next few years, she sang with several other bands. These included the Bumble Bees, the Blue Fighters, Danny and his Favourites, and General Four. In 1966, she also played the organ and sang with a band called the Motowns.
Joining Shocking Blue
In 1968, Mariska was asked to join the band Shocking Blue. She took the place of their first lead singer, Fred de Wilde, who had to join the army.
In 1969 and 1970, Shocking Blue became famous all over the world. This was thanks to their huge hit song, "Venus".
Solo Work and Reunions
Shocking Blue broke up on June 1, 1974. After this, Mariska Veres started her own solo career. Her songs "Take Me High" (1975) and "Lovin' You" (1976) were popular in the Netherlands, Belgium, and Germany. She also released other singles like "Tell It Like It Is" and "Little By Little."
Shocking Blue got back together in 1984. This reunion was successful, but one of the original members, Robbie van Leeuwen, left the group.
In 1993, Mariska started a jazz group called The Shocking Jazz Quintet. They recorded an album called Shocking You, which featured jazz versions of pop songs from the 1960s and 1970s. From 1993 to 2006, she performed with Shocking Blue again. She also recorded an album in 2003 called Gipsy Heart with Andrei Serban, which explored her Romani background.
A new version of "Venus" was released in 2007, after Mariska passed away. She had recorded "Venus" four times in total during her career.
Her Later Life
Mariska Veres had a long-term partner, André van Geldorp, who was a guitarist. She passed away on December 2, 2006, at the age of 59. She died from gallbladder cancer, which was found only three weeks before her death.
