Early Life and Comedy Career
Marjan Šarec began his schooling at Marija Vera primary school in Kamnik. Later, he attended a special high school for woodcraft in Ljubljana. After finishing high school in 1996, he decided to study acting.
He graduated as an actor from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in 2001. This academy is part of the University of Ljubljana. For several years, he worked with Slovenia's national television and radio, Radiotelevizija Slovenija.
Šarec was well-known as a comedian and a political satirist. A satirist uses humor to make fun of politics or society. His most famous character was Ivan Serpentinšek, a grumpy country person. He also imitated many famous people, including former President Janez Drnovšek.
Political Journey
Marjan Šarec's journey into politics began in his local town.
Local Government
In 2010, Šarec decided to run for mayor of Kamnik. This town is in north-central Slovenia. It was unusual for a media personality to win a political election, but Šarec succeeded. He won the election after a second round of voting.
In 2014, he ran for mayor again, this time with his own political group. He won easily in the first round. After becoming an elected official, Šarec stopped performing his comedy characters. He focused completely on his work as mayor.
Running for President
In May 2017, Šarec announced he would run for president of Slovenia. The presidential election happened on October 22. Even though he was known for comedy, Šarec said he was very serious about becoming president. He believed the president's job should be taken seriously.
He criticized the president at the time, Borut Pahor, for acting too much like a celebrity. Many people thought Šarec could be a strong candidate. He was popular with younger voters and those who supported left-leaning ideas. In the first round of the election, Šarec received 25% of the votes. This meant he went to a second round against Borut Pahor on November 12. He narrowly lost this final vote.
Becoming Prime Minister

In June 2018, Šarec and his political party, the List of Marjan Šarec, took part in the parliamentary election. His party won 12.6% of the votes, which gave them 13 members in the National Assembly. This made his party the second largest.
On 17 August 2018, Marjan Šarec was chosen to be the new head of the government. He led the 13th Government of Slovenia. He served as Prime Minister until 27 January 2020. He resigned after his Minister of Finance stepped down due to disagreements over health laws.
