Marjan Šarec (born December 2, 1977) is a well-known Slovenian politician. He has also worked as an actor and comedian. From 2018 to 2020, he served as the Prime Minister of Slovenia. More recently, he was the Minister of Defence from June 2022 to July 2024. In July 2024, he was elected to the European Parliament.

Before entering national politics, Marjan Šarec was famous for his comedy and satire. He was elected Mayor of Kamnik twice, serving from 2010 to 2018. In 2017, he ran for president but lost by a small margin to Borut Pahor. In 2018, his political party, the List of Marjan Šarec, won seats in the National Assembly. He became Prime Minister of Slovenia on August 17, 2018, and resigned on January 27, 2020.

Early Life and Comedy Career

Marjan Šarec began his schooling at Marija Vera primary school in Kamnik. He then went to the High School for Woodcraft in Ljubljana. After finishing high school in 1996, he decided to study acting. In 2001, he graduated as an actor from the Academy of Theatre, Radio, Film and Television in Ljubljana.

After graduating, Šarec worked a lot with the Slovenian National television. He appeared on popular radio and TV shows, often as a comedian and political satirist. A satirist uses humor, irony, or exaggeration to criticize people or ideas. His most famous character was Ivan Serpentinšek, a grumpy farmer from Upper Carniola. He was also known for imitating famous people, including former President Janez Drnovšek. Besides acting, he worked as a journalist and editor.

Marjan Šarec's Political Journey

Starting in Local Politics

In 2010, Marjan Šarec decided to run for mayor of Kamnik. This town is located in north-central Slovenia. It's quite rare for media personalities in Slovenia to succeed in politics, but Šarec did. He came in second in the first round of the election. However, he won the final round by a small number of votes.

Later, he joined the Positive Slovenia party. In the 2014 local election, he ran with his own political group. He was reelected as mayor in the first round, winning almost two-thirds of the votes. After becoming an elected official, Šarec stopped performing his comedy characters. He focused completely on his work as mayor.

Running for President

In May 2017, Šarec announced he would run for president in the upcoming presidential election. The election was set for October 22. Even though people remembered his acting career, Šarec said he was very serious about becoming president. He believed the president's job should be taken seriously.

He criticized the current president, Borut Pahor, for acting too much like a celebrity. Many saw Šarec as a strong candidate. He was expected to attract younger voters and those who supported left-leaning ideas. In the first round of the election, Šarec received 25% of the votes. This meant he had to go into a second round against Pahor on November 12. He lost this final round by a small margin.

Becoming Prime Minister

In June 2018, Marjan Šarec and his party, the List of Marjan Šarec, took part in the parliamentary election. His party won 12.6% of the votes, which gave them 13 seats in the National Assembly. This made LMŠ the second-largest party. On August 17, 2018, he was chosen to lead the new government, becoming the Prime Minister of Slovenia.

On January 27, 2020, Šarec resigned from his position as Prime Minister. This happened after the Minister of Finance resigned due to disagreements over new health laws.
