Marjorie Frances Bruford (born 1902, died 1958) was a talented British artist. She was also known as Midge Bruford. She is famous for being part of the Newlyn School of artists. This was a group of painters who lived and worked in Cornwall, England. Even though Marjorie was born in Eastbourne, she spent most of her adult life in Cornwall. She was very active in the art groups there.

Early Life and Art Training

Marjorie Bruford was born in Eastbourne, a town in England. She went to Badminton School in Clifton, Bristol. There, she became good friends with Mornie Birch. Mornie was the daughter of a famous Cornish artist named Lamorna Birch.

This friendship led Marjorie to discover her passion for art. In the 1920s, she started taking art classes. She studied at the Forbes School of Painting in Newlyn, Cornwall. Newlyn was a well-known art colony at the time.

Studying with Famous Artists

Marjorie continued to learn from many talented artists in Newlyn. She took lessons from Ernest Procter and Harold Harvey. Later, in the 1930s, she also studied with her friend's father, Lamorna Birch. These artists helped her develop her unique style.

For a while, Marjorie lived in a place called Treveneth, near Paul. She also spent some time studying art in Paris, France. After her time in Paris, she returned to Cornwall. She lived in a small cottage between the villages of Paul and Mousehole.

Artistic Style and Exhibitions

Marjorie Bruford mostly painted two main types of art. She was known for her beautiful portraits of people. She also painted many landscapes, showing the natural beauty of Cornwall. Another artist, Dod Procter, painted several portraits of Marjorie herself.

Showing Her Work

Marjorie Bruford was a very active artist. She showed her paintings in many important art galleries. During the 1920s, she exhibited her work at the Newlyn Art Gallery in Cornwall. She also displayed her art in London at the Goupil Gallery.

Her paintings were also shown at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. She exhibited with the New English Art Club and the Society of Women Artists. Marjorie was a regular exhibitor at the famous Royal Academy in London. Between 1924 and 1955, the Royal Academy accepted 32 of her paintings for display.
