Ms. Holt made history as the first Republican woman from Maryland to be elected to the U.S. Congress. She served as a U.S. Congresswoman for Maryland's 4th district from 1973 to 1987. She died in Severna Park, Maryland, when she was 97 years old.
Her Early Life and Schooling
Marjorie Holt was born in Birmingham, Alabama. She went to Jacksonville Junior College, which is now called Jacksonville University.
Later, from 1940 to 1941, she studied law at the University of Florida. She became a lawyer in Florida in 1949. She also became a lawyer in Maryland in 1962. After that, she started her law practice in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.
Her Time in Politics
In 1972, Marjorie Holt was elected to the U.S. Congress as a Republican. She served in Congress from January 3, 1973, until January 3, 1987.
She represented a part of Maryland that included towns like Brooklyn Park, Glen Burnie, Annapolis, and Crofton. This area also included Andrews Air Force Base.
After serving for many years, she decided not to run for re-election in 1986. She then went back to working as a lawyer in Baltimore. President Ronald Reagan also asked her to be part of a special committee that advised on arms control and disarmament. She lived in Severna Park, Maryland.
