Markéta Irglová (born February 28, 1988) is a talented singer, songwriter, and actress. She is from both the Czech Republic and Iceland. Markéta became famous for her role in the movie Once. She won an Academy Award for Best Original Song for "Falling Slowly". She wrote this song with her co-star, Glen Hansard.

Markéta Irglová's Career
Markéta Irglová is a member of the band The Swell Season with Glen Hansard. The band released their first album, also called The Swell Season, in 2006. In 2007, Markéta starred in the independent film Once.
Winning an Oscar
Markéta helped write many songs for the movie Once. This included "Falling Slowly", which won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. This made her the youngest person ever to win an Oscar in a non-acting role. The movie also won an award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. Markéta and The Swell Season also appeared on the 2007 I'm Not There soundtrack. They sang their version of Bob Dylan's song "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere".
When Markéta and Glen Hansard went to accept their Academy Award, the music started playing before she could speak. Later, the host Jon Stewart brought her back on stage. She finished her speech by saying, "fair play to those who dare to dream."
Broadway and Eurovision
The movie Once was later turned into a Broadway musical in 2012. This musical won eight Tony Awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
In 2022, Markéta was part of Söngvakeppnin 2022. This is Iceland's national competition to choose a song for the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. She sang the song "Mögulegt" / "Possible". In March 2022, Markéta and The Swell Season went on a tour in the United States.
In 2023, Markéta also competed in Eurovision Song CZ 2023. This was the Czech Republic's national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. She finished in 4th place. Also in 2023, it was announced that Markéta and Glen Hansard would go on a big world tour together. This was their largest tour since The Swell Season took a break.
Markéta Irglová's Personal Life
Markéta started learning piano when she was seven years old. She began playing guitar at age eight. She met Glen Hansard in 2004 when she was 16. Her parents organized a music festival in the Czech Republic and invited Glen's band, The Frames. Glen helped Markéta a lot with her music and starting her career.
Markéta and Glen's romantic relationship began while they were making the movie Once. Their relationship ended in 2009. A documentary film called The Swell Season shows what happened after the movie and their relationship.
Markéta was married to Tim Iseler from 2011 to 2012. In 2012, Markéta moved to Reykjavík, Iceland. There, she met Icelandic music producer Sturla Míó Þórisson. They met while she was recording her first solo album, Anar. They later got married and now have three children. Markéta speaks Icelandic fluently. She is a citizen of both the Czech Republic and Iceland.

MUNA (2014)
Her second album was named Muna. This word means "to remember" in Icelandic. Markéta wrote the songs over a year and recorded the album in six months.

Lila is Markéta's third album. It was released after an eight-year break. During this time, Markéta got married, had three children, and built a music studio.
