Markéta Irglová (born February 28, 1988) is a talented singer, songwriter, and actress. She is from the Czech Republic and also has Icelandic citizenship. Markéta became famous for her role in the movie Once. In this film, she also co-wrote and performed the song "Falling Slowly". This song won a very important award called the Academy Award for Best Original Song. She shared this award with her co-star, Glen Hansard.

Markéta's Music Career
Markéta Irglová is part of a band called The Swell Season. She formed this band with Glen Hansard. Their first album, also called The Swell Season, came out in 2006.
In 2007, Markéta starred in the independent film Once. She helped write many of the songs for the movie. One of these songs was "Falling Slowly". This song won an Academy Award for Best Original Song. This made Markéta the youngest person ever to win an Oscar for something other than acting. The movie Once also won an award at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival.
When Markéta and Glen Hansard won their Oscar, they were asked to stop their speech. This happened before Markéta could even start talking. Later, a comedian named Jon Stewart brought her back to the stage. She then finished her speech, saying "fair play to those who dare to dream."
The movie Once was later turned into a musical for the Broadway stage in 2012. This musical won eight Tony awards and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.
Markéta has also taken part in music competitions. In 2022, she was in Söngvakeppnin 2022. This is Iceland's competition to choose a song for the Eurovision Song Contest. She sang a song called "Mögulegt" / "Possible". In 2023, she also competed in Eurovision Song CZ 2023. This was the Czech Republic's national final for the Eurovision Song Contest 2023. She finished in 4th place.
In 2023, it was announced that Markéta and Glen Hansard would go on a big world tour together. This was their largest tour since their band, The Swell Season, took a break.
Markéta's Personal Life
Markéta started learning piano when she was seven years old. She began playing guitar at age eight. She met Glen Hansard in 2004 when she was 16. Her parents had organized a music festival in the Czech Republic. Glen Hansard's band, The Frames, played there. Glen helped her a lot with her music and starting her career.
Markéta and Glen Hansard started a romantic relationship while making the film Once. Their relationship ended in 2009. Markéta was married to Tim Iseler from 2011 to 2012.
In 2012, Markéta moved to Reykjavík, Iceland. There, she met an Icelandic music producer named Sturla Míó Þórisson. They met while she was recording her first solo album, Anar. They later got married and now have three children. Markéta speaks Icelandic very well. She is a citizen of both the Czech Republic and Iceland.
