Mark Craney (born August 26, 1952 – died November 26, 2005) was an American rock and jazz drummer. He was known for his amazing drumming skills and for playing with many famous musicians and bands.

Early Life and Musical Start

Mark Craney grew up in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. His father was also a drummer, which really inspired Mark to play music. From a young age, Mark started playing drums in local bands. Some of his first bands were "Vandals" and "Zero Ted."

Playing with Famous Musicians

Mark Craney became a very busy and respected drummer. He played with many well-known artists and groups throughout his career.

Working with Tommy Bolin and Gino Vannelli

In 1976, Mark played drums on Tommy Bolin's last concert tour. A few years later, in 1978, he played on Gino Vannelli's album Brother to Brother. He also joined Gino Vannelli for the tour that followed the album's release.

Jazz Fusion with Jean-Luc Ponty

Mark Craney also worked with the famous jazz violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. He played on Ponty's popular album Imaginary Voyage in 1976. Later, in 1980, he contributed to another one of Ponty's albums called Civilized Evil.

Joining Jethro Tull

From June 1980 to May 1981, Mark Craney was the drummer for the well-known rock band Jethro Tull. He played on their album A, which came out in 1980. He also toured with the band to support the album.

Other Projects

Mark Craney's drumming can also be heard on several songs by the band Ph.D.. In the mid-1990s, he was the drummer for Eric Burdon's I band. Eric Burdon was the lead singer of the famous band The Animals.

Biggest Hit Song

Even with all his impressive work, Mark Craney's most successful song was "I Just Wanna Stop." This song was a big hit for Gino Vannelli, reaching number 4 in the United States and number 1 in Canada. Mark's drumming helped make this song a success.

Later Life

Mark Craney passed away on November 26, 2005, in Sherman Oaks, California. He was 53 years old. He died from health problems related to diabetes and pneumonia.
