Markar Esayan (born February 4, 1969 – died October 16, 2020) was an important figure in Turkey. He was an Armenian author, journalist, and politician. He served as a member of the Turkish Parliament, representing Istanbul. He was part of the Justice and Development Party. Esayan was one of the first Armenian members of the Turkish Parliament in many years.

About Markar Esayan
Markar Esayan was born in Istanbul, Turkey, on February 4, 1969. His father was Armenian Christian, and his mother was Circassian Muslim. He attended Armenian Catholic schools for his early education. He later went to Private Getronagan Armenian High School. In 1995, he graduated from Anadolu University. He studied Business Management there.
His Career as a Journalist
Markar Esayan started his writing career at the Agos newspaper. He became a regular columnist in 2001. He worked there until about a year after Hrant Dink, the editor-in-chief, passed away in 2007.
Later, Esayan worked for the Taraf daily newspaper. He was the publishing coordinator and a columnist. For a short time, he even became the editor-in-chief. He also wrote for Yeni Şafak daily newspaper from 2013 to 2016. After that, he wrote for Akşam daily newspaper until September 2020.
His Books and Novels
Markar Esayan was also a talented author. His first novel was called The Cramped Room of the Present. It won a big prize in 2004 and was published in 2005. His second novel, Encounter, came out in October 2007. His third novel, Jerusalem, was published in 2011.
He also wrote two non-fiction books. Good Things was published in 2011. It collected many of his articles and essays. Another book, 60 Days That Stopped the World, was co-written with Cemil Ertem. This book looked at the Gezi Park protests.
His Political Role
Markar Esayan became a member of parliament for Istanbul. He was part of the Justice and Development Party (AKP). He served in the Turkish Parliament (TBMM) for three terms. He was elected as the Vice Chairperson of the European Union Compliance Committee. He was also a member of the Turkey – European Union Joint Parliamentary Committee. This role helped Turkey work with the European Union.
Later Life and Passing
Markar Esayan passed away on October 16, 2020. He was 51 years old. He died from gastric cancer. His funeral was held at the Surp Asdvadzadzin Patriarchal Church in Istanbul. He was buried at the Şişli Armenian Cemetery in Istanbul. Many important people attended his funeral. This showed how respected he was.
