Markaryd Municipality (which in Swedish is Markaryds kommun) is a special area in south-west Kronoberg County in southern Sweden. It's like a local government area, and its main town is Markaryd.

Long ago, in 1916, a part of the Markaryd countryside was separated to form a market town with the same name. But in 1960, these two parts joined back together. The municipality we know today was created in 1971 when the areas of Traryd and Markaryd became one.

Nature and Fun Activities

The nature in Markaryd Municipality is mostly covered by thick forests, just like in many parts of Småland. But you can also find some important agricultural areas where crops are grown.

The Lagan River flows from the north to the south through the municipality. This river is super important for the local water system. It's a great place for fun activities like fishing, canoeing, and camping.

If you love walking in nature, there are special paths through the forests and wildlife areas. Just east of Markaryd town, you can even go on a moose safari! It's a special trip arranged by a place called Smalandet where you can see these amazing animals.

The big European route E4 motorway passes right by the town of Markaryd and another town called Strömsnäsbruk. This makes it easy to travel to and from the municipality.

Towns and Villages

Markaryd Municipality has four main urban areas, which are also called tätort or localities in Sweden. These are like towns or larger villages.

Here are the localities listed by how many people lived there as of December 31, 2005. The main town, where the municipality's offices are, is shown in bold.
