Marks Point is a lovely suburb in New South Wales, Australia. It's part of the City of Lake Macquarie. You can find it about 23 kilometers (14 miles) from Newcastle's city center. Marks Point is special because it's a small piece of land that sticks out into the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. Long ago, the Awabakal Aboriginal people were the first to live in this area.

History of Marks Point

Marks Point is one of the oldest suburbs in the Lake Macquarie area. It gets its name from the Marks brothers.

Early Settlers and Orchards

The Marks family were important early settlers. Henry and Charles Marks were brothers. Their brother, Maurice Marks, was an early settler in nearby Belmont.

Henry Marks bought land at the "Point." He and Charles then started an orchard together. In 1885, Henry sold his share to Charles. Charles Marks lived at Marks Point for the rest of his life.

The Marks brothers' orchard was famous for growing oranges and pineapples. Even in the 1920s, there were still Chinese Market Gardens close to where Marks Point Public School is today.

Local Businesses Over Time

A man named Charlie Hollis ran a slipway and marine business. This business was on Edith Street from 1954 to 1980. After that, it became the Marks Point Marina, which is still there today.

Belmont Airport

Marks Point and the areas nearby used to be served by the Belmont Airport. This airport was located in the southern part of the suburb. However, the airport has since been closed down. It is now being redeveloped for other uses.
