Pelican is a lovely suburb in New South Wales, Australia. It is part of the City of Lake Macquarie. This area is about 25 kilometers (15 miles) southwest of Newcastle's main city area. Pelican sits right across the entrance to Lake Macquarie from the town of Swansea.

Pelican is a small community with a population of about 874 people as of 2021. It covers an area of 0.7 square kilometers. The suburb is quite low, with an elevation of just 3 meters (about 10 feet) above sea level.
A Look Back in Time
Before 1991, this suburb was known as Pelican Flat. The name was changed to simply Pelican. The very first people to live in this land were the Aboriginal people. Specifically, the Awabakal people were the traditional owners of this area. They have a rich history and deep connection to the land.
The public school in Pelican opened its doors in 1938. This means it has been a place for learning for many generations of local kids.
Where is Pelican?
Pelican is located on the eastern side of Lake Macquarie. It's surrounded by water on its western and northwestern sides. To the north, you'll find Marks Point. To the east, south, and southeast, it borders Blacksmiths. Just a little to the southwest is Little Pelican.
