About the Book's Idea
This book is an educational story for children. It helps explain what the Vice President of the United States does each day. The story is told through the eyes of the Pence family's pet rabbit, Marlon Bundo. The book was first announced on Marlon Bundo's Instagram page in September 2017.
Karen Pence, who is the wife of the Vice President, used to be a teacher. She is also a watercolor artist. She painted all the pictures for the book over about four months. The book came out on March 19, 2018. It was published by Regnery Kids, which is part of a conservative book publisher.
The book went on a tour to different places. These included military bases and presidential libraries. It also visited a conservative group called Focus on the Family. Money from the book's sales was given to two charities. One was Tracy's Kids, an art therapy program. Karen Pence helped bring this program to the Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis. The other charity was The A21 Campaign. Some of Karen Pence's original paintings from the book were also sold to raise money for Tracy's Kids.
Meet Marlon Bundo, the Rabbit
Charlotte Pence got Marlon Bundo in 2013. At that time, she was a student at DePaul University studying film. The rabbit was named Marlon Bundo after the seller asked Charlotte to make an offer for him. This reminded her of a famous line from the movie The Godfather. In the movie, a character named Don Vito Corleone says, "I'm gonna make him an offer he can't refuse."
Charlotte Pence used the rabbit in a short film project. After that, he became a family pet. Marlon Bundo is known for being very well-behaved. He was the first rabbit to ever fly on Air Force Two. This happened when the Pence family moved to Washington, D.C.. The Pences even planned to take Marlon Bundo with them on the book's press tour.
