Charlotte Pence Bond graduated from DePaul University. She has written articles for various publications like The DePaulia, Thought Catalog, and Glamour. She also wrote fiction for The Isis Magazine and poems for an Oxford student blog. While in college, she gained experience in film production. She even won an Emmy Award in 2014 for a film she helped write and produce.

She is known for her children's book, Marlon Bundo's A Day in the Life of the Vice President, which was published in 2018. As of 2022, she also writes for The Daily Wire, a news website.

Growing Up and School

Charlotte Pence Bond grew up in Columbus, Indiana, with her parents and siblings. Her father, Mike Pence, always encouraged her to write. He even treasured a biography she wrote about him when she was just seven years old. Her mother, Karen Pence, mentioned that Charlotte had been a storyteller since she was very young.

Charlotte describes her family as "very, very close." She said they talk about everything together. She also shared that she and her siblings could choose how much they wanted to be involved in politics. She mentioned that they even have political discussions at home and over the phone.

College and Advanced Studies

During her junior year at DePaul University, Charlotte spent a semester studying English and Philosophy in Oxford, England, at St Catherine's College, Oxford. At DePaul, she was active in several groups. These included the school ministry, a student group working to address violence in Chicago, and creative writing and film communities. She also joined the Chi Omega sorority.

She worked on documentary projects, and one of them won nine regional Emmy Awards. In June 2016, she graduated from DePaul University College of Computing and Digital Media. She earned two degrees: one in Digital Cinema – Screenwriting and another in English – Creative Writing. In September 2020, Charlotte began her second year at the Harvard Divinity School, working towards a master's degree.

Her Work and Writing

While in college, Charlotte Pence Bond completed several internships in film production. In 2013, she interned at WFYI, a public broadcasting station in Indiana. There, she worked in the television production department.

Film Projects

Charlotte was an associate producer and co-writer for the 2013 documentary film Fleeced: Speaking Out Against Senior Financial Abuse. This film shared the stories of older adults who had been tricked by financial criminals. The film won a 2014 Emmy award for the Lower Great Lakes region. Since then, Charlotte has worked on other documentary and short film projects. In 2016, she shared that she wanted to work on the creative side of film production. She hoped to turn stories, books, scripts, and real-life events into films.

Writing Career

Charlotte Pence Bond is a published writer. She has written poems, short stories, and articles. In 2014, she wrote an article for Thought Catalog about her religious beliefs. In 2015, she wrote a column for DePaul University's The DePaulia about her time studying abroad in Oxford. She wrote about finding running paths and exploring local pubs.

Also in 2015, Charlotte published poems for the Oxford student blog Seven Voices. She also wrote fiction pieces for The Isis Magazine, a student magazine in the UK. She wrote an essay for Glamour that was released before her father's debate during the 2016 Donald Trump presidential campaign. In this essay, Charlotte wrote about the important lessons she learned from her father. She described how her life changed after her father became a vice presidential candidate. She wrote, "I went from taking public transit in Chicago to riding in a presidential motorcade in the span of just a few months."

Campaign Trail and Views

In early August 2016, Charlotte began traveling across the U.S. with her father during his campaign. This included attending the 2016 Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio. Since she had recently graduated, she had time to travel. She joked that her role on the campaign trail was to "babysit her parents." Charlotte said she was the only one of her siblings at home when her father was nominated.

Charlotte describes her political views as "more of a moderate or independent." She has said that she doesn't always agree with all the policies of her father and Donald Trump. She added, "I think I have views that go across the board," which she says her parents have encouraged. In 2018, Charlotte shared that her father tells her, when facing public criticism, "That's what freedom looks like."

After the inauguration, Charlotte helped support her parents without taking official roles. She worked full-time in Washington, D.C. at a film production company. In September 2017, she started a training program at the United Talent Agency.

Marlon Bundo, the Famous Rabbit

In 2013, when Charlotte was a freshman at DePaul, she needed a rabbit for a short film project. She bought a black and white rabbit from Craigslist. Charlotte named the rabbit 'Marlon Bundo' after the actor Marlon Brando. Her friend noticed a similarity between Brando's famous line from The Godfather and the rabbit seller's response, "Make me an offer," when asked about the price.

Charlotte remembered, "We drove out to the suburbs, my friends and I, and we picked him up. I think he was like $20. He was in the short film, and I just kept him after that." Bundo lived with Charlotte throughout her four years of college. Afterward, he continued to live with the Pences at Number One Observatory Circle.

The Children's Book

Charlotte created an Instagram account for Bundo "right after [her] dad was inaugurated [Vice President]." She wasn't sure if anyone would follow it. Because of Bundo's popularity on Instagram, and because Karen Pence is a watercolor painter, Charlotte and her mother thought about creating a children's book. Charlotte told The Denver Post that she "really [likes] children's literature and middle-grade fiction" and had "always wanted to be a writer."

On March 19, 2018, the children's picture book Marlon Bundo's A Day in the Life of the Vice President was released. Charlotte wrote the book, and her mother, Karen, illustrated it. The picture book tells the story of Marlon Bundo observing the Vice President's daily activities. Charlotte said they would "love to do something for a sequel."

A Parody Book

A day before Charlotte's book was released, a parody book titled A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo was published. This book was written by comedy writer Jill Twiss from Last Week Tonight with John Oliver and illustrated by Gerald Kelley. In the parody book, Marlon Bundo falls in love with another rabbit named Wesley.

The money made from the parody book goes to help two charities: The Trevor Project, which offers support to young people, and AIDS United. Both Charlotte's book and the parody book became best-sellers on Amazon. By late March 2018, Charlotte's book had sold about 100,000 copies, and Twiss's book had sold about 400,000 copies. They were both on The New York Times Best Seller list for Children's Picture Books.

Personal Life

Charlotte Pence Bond became engaged to Navy lieutenant Henry Bond in July 2019. They were married in December of that year. Their daughter, Etta, was born in February 2023.
