Marquam is a small, unincorporated community in Clackamas County, Oregon, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a place where people live, but it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town does.
You can find Marquam along Oregon Route 213. It is located between the cities of Molalla and Silverton.
The Story Behind Marquam's Name
The community of Marquam got its name from an early pioneer named Alfred Marquam. He was a pioneer who traveled all the way from Maryland, through Missouri, to Oregon in 1845.
Alfred Marquam's Contributions
Alfred Marquam played a big part in starting the community. He claimed a large piece of land, about 640 acres (which is about 2.6 square kilometers). On this land, he built the very first house and the first store in what would become Marquam.
In 1889, the Marquam post office was officially opened. It was named after Alfred Marquam, and he also became its first postmaster. A postmaster is the person in charge of a post office.
A Notable Brother
Alfred Marquam had a younger brother named Philip Augustus Marquam. Philip was also an important figure in early Oregon history. He became a well-known judge in the state.
