Paul-Eugène de Faudoas began his military education at a special school. This school was called the École d'application de l'artillerie et du génie. He started there on September 29, 1803, to become an officer cadet. This means he was training to be a military leader.

A Soldier's Life

The Marquis de Faudoas started his military career in 1807. He worked as an aide-de-camp for a general named Anne Jean Marie René Savary. An aide-de-camp is like a personal assistant to a high-ranking officer.

By 1813, he was promoted to a higher rank. He became a colonel, leading two different regiments of soldiers. These were the 3rd Lancers Regiment and the 25th Hunter Regiment.

In 1815, he played a key role during a time known as the Hundred Days. He commanded the 4th regiment of hunters during this period in France.

After 1815, he took a break from military service. He was not active in the army until 1823. On July 30, 1823, he was called back to the French Army. He returned as a colonel, leading the 3rd regiment of hunters.

He continued to rise in rank. On February 22, 1829, he was promoted to Maréchal de camp. This was a very important position in the army.

Fighting in Algeria

In 1832, the Marquis de Faudoas was sent to Algeria. His mission was to help bring peace to the Mitidja region. At this time, the Algerians were often fighting against the French military occupation.

On April 6, 1832, he led a group of horsemen. He was with Colonel Maximilien Joseph Schauenburg. They went on an expedition near the Oued El Harrach river. The next day, this expedition led to an event known as the Massacre of El Ouffia.

Later, on October 2, 1837, he organized a battle in Boufarik. In this battle, the Algerian forces were defeated. About 500 rebels were lost during this fight.

Back in France

After his time in Algeria, he returned to France. On August 24, 1838, he received another promotion. He became a Lieutenant general, which is a very high rank.

Then, on October 27, 1841, he took command of the 11th Military Division. This meant he was in charge of a large military area.

His Final Years

The Marquis de Faudoas passed away in Bordeaux on September 13, 1844. He was 56 years old. He was buried in a cemetery in the city where he died.
