Marriottsville is a small community in Maryland, United States. It is not a city or town with its own government. Instead, it is an unincorporated community that spreads across parts of Howard, Carroll, and Baltimore counties. You can find Marriottsville along Marriottsville Road, about 10.3 miles (16.6 km) north-northwest of Columbia.

History of Marriottsville
Marriottsville got its name from the estate of General William Hammond Marriott. His family, the Marriotts, had settled in Maryland way back in 1664. The land where Marriottsville now stands was originally part of a very large area owned by Charles Carroll of Carrollton, a famous person from Maryland's history.
Early Days and Development
A big historical estate called Waverley was a major part of this area. It was known as the Howard District of Anne Arundel County back then. The community was also home to a quarry that dug up magnesium limestone. There were many farms, like "Prospect Hill," and a well-known farmer named Henry O. Devries lived there.
In 1836, something exciting happened: a new railroad was being tested! However, a railroad car carrying 40 important city leaders went off the tracks. Later, in 1866, a big flood in the region washed away Reese's Mill.
Changes and Growth
From 1965 to 1974, many large pieces of land in Marriottsville were bought by people hoping to build new things. In 1977, the county leader, Edward L. Cochran, decided to put a landfill in Marriottsville. This landfill, called Alpha Ridge Landfill, opened in May 1980.
Later, there were plans to make the landfill bigger. But these plans were stopped when people found out that the groundwater was getting polluted. Because of this, public water lines were extended to the area. This also led to more homes being built in Marriottsville.
In 1998, a new golf course, the Waverly Woods Golf Club, opened in the community.
Notable People from Marriottsville
Marriottsville has been home to some important figures in Maryland's history.
- George Howard (1789-1846) was the twenty-second Governor of Maryland. He was the son of John Eager Howard. George Howard also lived at the "Waverley" estate after his father gave it to him in 1811.
- John Eager Howard (1752-1827) was a brave Colonel in the Revolutionary War. He also served as a U.S. Senator and was the fifth Governor of Maryland. Howard County is named after him! He owned the "Waverley" estate, which you can still see in Marriottsville today.
