Marrister is a small community located on the west coast of Whalsay, one of the many Shetland islands in Scotland. It's part of the Nesting area. From Marrister, you can look across a narrow stretch of water called Linga Sound to the nearby island of West Linga.
A Glimpse into Marrister's Past
Viking Connections
Marrister has a long history, going all the way back to the time of the Vikings. People lived here even then! An exciting discovery was made when a gold Viking ring was found in the area. This shows that Vikings were definitely present in Marrister.
Life in the 1800s
During the 1800s and early 1900s, the Smith family was very important in Marrister. They were well-known in the community.
There's a large flat rock near Marrister known as the Skate of Marrister. It's a natural landmark in the area.
In the 1870s, a writer named Robert Cowie visited Marrister. He wrote about how nice the local church and the minister's house (called a manse) looked. These buildings had been built not long before his visit.
