A Look Back in Time

Mars Hill got its name from a famous place in Ancient Greece. That place was called Mars Hill, also known as the Areopagus.

Long ago, Mars Hill had a busy factory. It was called the Wright and Rice Iron Foundry. This factory started working in 1835. They made many different kinds of machines and tools.

During the American Civil War, soldiers camped near the foundry. These were from the 7th Illinois Volunteer Infantry Regiment. The factory also made weapons for the Confederacy during the war. Sadly, the factory was destroyed in May 1863.

Later, in 1888, Mars Hill became a stop for trains. A passenger station for the Louisville & Nashville Railroad was built there.

Famous People from Mars Hill
