What is the North Branch Marsh River?
The North Branch Marsh River is a special type of river because it is tidal. This means its water level changes with the ocean's tides, even though it's inland. It gets its water from a stream called Marsh Stream.
Where Does Marsh Stream Start?
Marsh Stream is a much longer river, about 33.6 miles (54.1 km) long, located in central Maine. It begins on the northern side of Frye Mountain. The exact spot where it starts is on the border between the towns of Montville and Knox.
How Does Marsh Stream Flow?
From its start, Marsh Stream flows generally northeast. It passes through several towns, including Knox, Brooks, and Monroe.
Later, it forms the boundary line between the towns of Winterport and Frankfort. The stream then turns southeast and flows right through the village of Frankfort.
Becoming the North Branch Marsh River
When Marsh Stream reaches the village of Frankfort, it meets the tidewater. This is the point where the stream becomes the North Branch Marsh River. From here, it continues its short journey to Marsh Bay and then to the Penobscot River.
