Marshall is a town located in Madison County, North Carolina, in the United States. In 2020, about 777 people lived there. It is the county seat of Madison County, which means it's where the county's main government offices are.
Marshall is also part of the Asheville metropolitan area. This is a larger region that includes the city of Asheville and nearby towns. The town of Marshall is unique because it's bordered by the French Broad River on one side and surrounded by steep mountains on the others. People in Madison County sometimes say Marshall is "a block wide, a mile long, sky high and hell deep" because of its location!

History of Marshall
Marshall has a rich history, with several important buildings and places listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These include the Bank of French Broad, the Capitola Manufacturing Company Cotton Yarn Mill, the Madison County Courthouse, Marshall High School, the Marshall Main Street Historic District, the James H. White House, and the Jeff White House. These places help tell the story of the town.
Marshall During the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Marshall was an important center for the Confederate government in Madison County. However, many people in the rural areas of the county supported the Union. This led to disagreements and conflicts.
For example, in 1861, on a day when people were voting about leaving the Union, a dispute led to a shooting. Later, in 1863, there was a shortage of salt, which was needed to preserve food. A group of men raided a salt storage building in Marshall. They also went to the home of a Confederate officer. In response, some soldiers carried out a harsh act, which is known as the Shelton Laurel massacre.
Recent Events in Marshall
In 2024, Hurricane Helene caused significant damage to Marshall. The hurricane destroyed several buildings and harmed the town hall.

- Independent filmmakers Joel Haver and Dylan Dexter released a movie called 31 Days in Marshall, North Carolina in 2019. This film was shot entirely in Marshall in 2017. Many local townspeople were part of the cast and even provided background music!
