Marshall Julius Jefferson (born September 19, 1959) is an American musician. He is famous for his work in house music, especially the styles known as Chicago house and deep house. Many people call him the "father of house music" because of his important contributions.

The Story of Marshall Jefferson
Marshall Jefferson started his music journey as a record producer in Chicago. He worked at Universal Recording Studios. There, he met Larry Sherman, who owned Trax Records.
"Move Your Body" and Early Success
In 1986, Marshall Jefferson released a very important song called "Move Your Body". This song was special because it was the first house music track to use a piano. It became very popular and influenced many other artists.
During the late 1980s, when house music was very popular, Marshall Jefferson created music under different names. Some of his other names included Virgo, Jungle Wonz, Truth, and On the House. He also produced "deep house" songs for artists like CeCe Rogers and Sterling Void. He helped produce the first two albums for the group Ten City.
In March 1987, Marshall Jefferson and Frankie Knuckles went on the first house music concert tour in the United Kingdom.
"Move Your Body" in Pop Culture
The song "Move Your Body" has appeared in several popular places. It was in the video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on a house music radio station. The song also appeared in the movie 24 Hour Party People. It was also featured in the 1991 documentary film Paris Is Burning.
Later Career and Recent Work
Marshall Jefferson took a break from music in 1990. He then returned to being a DJ in 1993. He moved to Billericay in Essex, England. There, he had a five-year job as a resident DJ for events like Tribal Gathering and Big Love.
Marshall Jefferson now lives in Manchester, England. In 2019, he released a new version of "Move Your Body." This remix was made with Solardo, a music duo from Manchester. The remix was recognized with a Silver award in 2023.
In 2021, he worked again with Byron Stingily. They released a song called "Be Free." This was the first new song in 25 years from Stingily's house music group, Ten City.
Marshall Jefferson was also featured in Episode 3 of the 2024 PBS series Disco: Soundtrack of a Revolution.
