The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum is an awesome art museum. It shows off the life and amazing sculptures of a famous artist named Marshall Fredericks. You can find this museum at Saginaw Valley State University in University Center, Michigan. The best part is that it's completely free to visit!

History of the Museum

The idea for this museum started with a woman named Dorothy (Honey) Arbury. She studied with sculptor Marshall Fredericks back in the 1930s. This was when she attended Kingswood School in Bloomfield Hills.

Honey Arbury also knew Fredericks through her uncle, Alden B. Dow. He was a well-known architect in Midland. Fredericks and Dow often worked together on art projects for buildings.

Honey Arbury was very involved with Saginaw Valley College (now Saginaw Valley State University). She and her husband, Ned Arbury, along with Marshall Fredericks, came up with a great idea. They wanted to create a permanent place to show Fredericks' artwork at the college.

Everyone worked together to make this happen. The Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Gallery opened to the public in May 1988. It was built inside the new Arbury Fine Arts Center. In 1999, the gallery was renamed the Marshall M. Fredericks Sculpture Museum.

What You Can See at the Museum

The museum has many cool areas to explore. Each one gives you a different look at Marshall Fredericks' art and how he created it.

Main Exhibit Gallery

The Main Exhibit Gallery is where you'll find about 200 of Fredericks' works. Most of these are plaster models, which are like drafts or early versions of his sculptures. They show his work from over 70 years! The most impressive piece here is a huge, 28-foot tall statue of Christ. It stands tall on the south wall of the museum.

Special Exhibitions

Beyond the main gallery, there are special areas for temporary exhibits. These shows change every few months. They feature art from artists all over the world, the country, and Michigan. You might see paintings, prints, ceramics, quilts, drawings, or cool photographs. Sometimes, they even show unique pieces from the museum's own collection.

Sculptor’s Studio

Ever wondered how a sculptor works? The Sculptor's Studio is a permanent exhibit that shows you just that. It has real tools and equipment that Fredericks used. Everything is set up to explain how sculptures are made, step by step. It's like walking into his actual workspace!

Sculpture Garden

Right next to the museum, there's a beautiful Sculpture Garden. This outdoor space has a growing collection of more than 20 bronze sculptures by Fredericks. You can walk around and enjoy his art surrounded by nature.
