Martín de Goiti (born around 1534 – died 1575) was a Spanish soldier. He was part of the group that helped Spain take control of lands in the East Indies and the Pacific starting in 1565.

From his base in Mexico City, he led an important trip to Manila in 1569. This trip was ordered by Miguel López de Legazpi, another Spanish leader. De Goiti fought against local leaders like Rajah Sulayman, Rajah Matanda, and Lakandula. These battles helped Spain colonize parts of Luzon.

Spanish Arrival in Luzon

The Spanish soldiers arrived in Luzon on May 8, 1570. They set up camp near Manila Bay for several weeks. During this time, they tried to make friends with the local Muslim groups.

However, on May 24, 1570, fighting broke out between the two sides. The Spanish took control of Tondo. They faced thousands of local warriors there. The Spanish defeated many of the people loyal to Tariq Suleiman, Rajah Matanda, and Lakan Dula.

Taking Control of Manila

The Spanish army then marched towards the Pasig River. They took over the settlements in Manila on June 6, 1570. After taking control, they burned these settlements.

After this battle, a type of fighting called guerrilla warfare started. This meant small groups of local fighters kept attacking the Spanish. This fighting continued for about ten months.

The Spanish built strong defenses in the area. They also built a military base called Fort Santiago. This fort became an important trading post with Mexico.

On June 24, 1571, the Spanish gained full control of the settlements. This happened after Miguel López de Legazpi arrived in Manila. He made a peace agreement with the local leaders. To seal the peace, one of his daughters married Batang Dula. Batang Dula was the son of Lakan Dula and was expected to become the next leader.

Manila Becomes a Capital

The Spanish taking over Manila led to it becoming a permanent settlement. It also became the capital city of the Spanish East Indies.

Martín de Goiti continued to explore other areas. He explored Pampanga and Pangasinan. He also helped establish several Spanish cities in Luzon between 1571 and 1573.

King Philip II of Spain rewarded De Goiti and other soldiers. They were given large estates called haciendas for the lands they had helped conquer.

Fighting Chinese Pirates

In 1574, De Goiti fought in a big battle. About 3,000 Chinese sea pirates sailed from the South China Sea. Their leader, Limahong, attacked the Spanish settlements in Manila.

De Goiti was killed during these attacks by the pirates. Spanish soldiers from Vigan and Cebu came to help. Martín de Goiti's second-in-command was Juan de Salcedo. Salcedo left Ilocos Sur when he heard the news.

He traveled to Manila and found that the pirates had taken over the settlements. Salcedo's forces attacked the pirates and drove them out of Manila. Limahong and his ships then went to Pangasinan to get ready for more fighting.

In 1575, Salcedo's army went north to Pangasinan. They chased the pirates and surrounded them for three months.

Legacy

Martín de Goiti was buried in a tomb. His tomb is inside the San Agustin Church in Intramuros.
