Marta Rovira i Vergés (born 25 January 1977, in Vic) is a Spanish lawyer and politician. She was the General Secretary of Republican Left of Catalonia (a political party) from 2011 to 2024.
About Marta Rovira
Marta Rovira was born in Vic, a town in Catalonia, Spain. Some of her family members were also involved in local politics. For example, her grandfather was a mayor, and one of her great-grandfathers was also a mayor.
She studied Law at Pompeu Fabra University. She also earned a degree in Political Sciences and Public Administration from the Open University of Catalonia.
Before becoming a full-time politician, Marta worked as a lawyer. She also taught Administrative Law at the Police School of Catalonia for a few years. She was also in charge of support services for the Catalan Agency for Development Cooperation.
Marta was active in different groups even before her main political career. She was part of young lawyers' groups and student associations. She also participated in a traditional Catalan Castellers group (human towers) called Sagals d'Osona. She was also a member of the Red Cross, helping people in need.
Her Political Journey
Marta Rovira joined the Esquerra Republicana (Republican Left of Catalonia) party in 2005. In 2008, she was chosen to be the National Secretary for International, European, and Cooperation politics for her party. She also served as the General Secretary of the European Free Alliance from 2008 to 2012. This alliance brings together political parties from different European regions.
In 2011, she became the General Secretary of Esquerra Republicana. She shared the leadership of the party with Oriol Junqueras, who was the president.
Marta was elected to the Parliament of Catalonia in 2012. From 2012 to 2015, she was the main spokesperson for her party's group in the Parliament. In 2015, she was re-elected as part of a group called Junts pel Sí, which supported Catalonia becoming an independent country. She continued to be a spokesperson for this group.
In the 2017 elections for the Catalan Parliament, Marta Rovira and Oriol Junqueras led their party's campaign. Esquerra Republicana won 32 seats in the Parliament.
Marta Rovira is passionate about several important ideas. She strongly supports human rights, especially women's rights. She also believes in social justice, which means everyone should have fair opportunities. A big part of her political work is focused on the Catalan independence movement. This movement aims for Catalonia to become its own country, separate from Spain.
She believes in a "republican" way of governing. This means focusing on what's best for everyone, ensuring equal chances, being open and honest (transparency), and having no corruption. Marta thinks that these goals can best be achieved if Catalonia becomes an independent republic. She believes the people of Catalonia should be able to vote in a referendum to decide their future.
Living Abroad and Return
In 2018, Marta Rovira faced legal challenges related to her involvement in the 2017 Catalan independence referendum. Because of this situation, she decided to move to Switzerland. She felt she would not get a fair trial if she stayed in Spain.
While living in Switzerland, she continued her work as the General Secretary of Esquerra Republicana. She also worked on projects that studied cultural and language differences, the right of people to decide their own future, how to solve disagreements, and human rights.
Marta Rovira lived in Switzerland until July 2024. She could not return to Spain because of the legal situation. However, in July 2024, her legal case was closed. This meant she could finally return to Catalonia, and she crossed the Spanish border to come home.
Family Life
Marta Rovira is married to Raúl Presseguer. They have a daughter named Agnès, who was born in 2011.
