Martha Jones is a cool character from the TV show Doctor Who and its spin-off, Torchwood. She's played by actress Freema Agyeman. Martha travels through time and space with the Tenth Doctor in his amazing time machine, the TARDIS. She became his main companion after Rose Tyler. Her first adventure was in the episode "Smith and Jones" on 31 March 2007.

Martha's Adventures

On Television

Martha first appeared in the 2007 series of Doctor Who in the episode "Smith and Jones". She was a medical student when her hospital was suddenly moved to the Moon! Martha helped save everyone alongside the mysterious alien time traveler, the Doctor (David Tennant).

To thank her, the Doctor invited her for one trip in the TARDIS. But soon, he realized she was more than just a passenger. He even gave her the key to the TARDIS, making her a full-time "companion".

Martha sometimes felt sad because the Doctor didn't seem to notice her feelings for him. In one adventure, when the Doctor thought he was human, he fell in love with someone else. Martha bravely told him, "You had to go and fall in love with a human... and it wasn't me."

In the exciting final episode of that series, Martha spent a whole year traveling the world. She worked on a clever plan that saved the Doctor and reversed time itself, undoing the evil actions of the Master.

Martha also appeared in the 2008 series of Torchwood. This show focuses on another Doctor Who character, Captain Jack Harkness. Martha joined the Torchwood team for a three-episode story, starting with "Reset".

Later, Martha returned to Doctor Who for more adventures in Series 4. She appeared in episodes like "The Sontaran Stratagem" and "The Doctor's Daughter". She came back again for the big two-part finale, "The Stolen Earth" and "Journey's End". By then, Martha had been promoted to a special US division of UNIT, a military organization that deals with alien threats.

Other Stories

Besides her TV appearances, Martha Jones also stars in Doctor Who novels and comic books.

In books, Martha appears in the "New Series Adventures" series. The first book she was in was Made of Steel by Terrance Dicks. She then appeared in many other novels, including Sting of the Zygons by Stephen Cole. Actress Freema Agyeman, who plays Martha, is on the cover of every novel. A special collection of stories called The Story of Martha was published in late 2008. It focused on Martha's adventures when she was traveling alone.

Martha has also appeared in comic strips. You can find her in Doctor Who Magazine and Doctor Who Adventures comics. She also shows up in the Battles in Time comic series. In 2007, an American company called IDW Publishing started making Doctor Who comics featuring the Tenth Doctor and Martha.
