A Look Back: Martin City's Story
The area we now know as Martin City was first planned out on January 4, 1887. It was originally called Tilden. The town was named after Samuel Jones Tilden, a presidential candidate who lost a very close election in 1876.
In 1895, the town's name was changed to Martin City. This happened because there was already another town named Tilden, Missouri in a different county. The new name, Martin City, honored Edward Lowe Martin. He was a very important person in Kansas City.
Edward Lowe Martin's Legacy
Edward Lowe Martin helped start the Kansas City Distilling Company. He also ran a wholesale liquor business. Mr. Martin was even the Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri in 1873. He also served on the Board of Education for many years, from 1875 to 1896. He was also a business partner with Arthur Stilwell in a railroad company. This company later became the Kansas City Southern Railway.
Life in Early Martin City
In the early 1900s, Martin City was a busy place. It had a train depot where people could catch trains on the Missouri Pacific Railroad line. There was also a hotel, a blacksmith shop, and a general store. These businesses served the people living in and around the town.
A bank opened in 1911 to help the townspeople with their money. However, like many banks during the Great Depression, the Martin City bank closed in 1933.
The 1920s were known as the "Roaring Twenties," and Martin City was full of activity. There was a dry goods store that had a dance hall upstairs. Kids and adults alike could go there to roller-skate and have fun!
Rebuilding and Growth
In May 1957, a powerful tornado caused a lot of damage in the area. But the community worked hard to rebuild. Over the years, many of its small businesses became popular places for people from all over the Kansas City area to visit.
In 1963, Martin City officially became part of Kansas City, Missouri. This meant the area south of Longview Road, all the way to the Cass County line, joined the larger city.
Education for Martin City Students
Students living in the Martin City neighborhood attend schools in the Grandview School District. They go to Martin City Elementary and Middle School. For high school, students attend Grandview High School in nearby Grandview, MO.
