Martin Fotherby (born around 1560, died 1620) was an important English church leader. He became the Bishop of Salisbury, which is a high-ranking position in the church.

Martin Fotherby's Life

Martin Fotherby was born in Grimsby, England. He went to the University of Cambridge to study. There, he became a scholar at Trinity College.

Later, he became the rector of St Mary-le-Bow church. A rector is a priest who is in charge of a church. In 1596, he took on another church role as a prebendary at Canterbury Cathedral. He became the Bishop of Salisbury in 1618. Martin Fotherby passed away in London on March 11, 1620. He was buried at All Hallows church. His brother, Charles Fotherby, also held important church positions. Charles was the Archdeacon of Canterbury and later the Dean of Canterbury.

Martin Fotherby's Writings

Martin Fotherby wrote a book called Atheomastix. This book was published in 1622, after he had died. The title means "a whip against atheism." The book was written to argue against atheism, which is the belief that there is no God.

In his book, Fotherby mainly used the ideas of St. Thomas Aquinas. Aquinas was a famous thinker who lived long before Fotherby. Fotherby believed that people naturally know that God exists. His book also provided many poems. These poems were later used in a famous book by John Smith of Jamestown. Smith's book was called The Generall Historie of Virginia, New-England, and the Summer Isles. It was published in 1624.
