Martin John Tobin (born 23 April 1951) is an Irish-American doctor. He is a special kind of doctor called a critical care physician, who helps people with very serious illnesses. He is also a pulmonologist, which means he is an expert in lungs and breathing problems. Dr. Tobin is especially known for his knowledge about acute respiratory failure (when lungs suddenly stop working well) and mechanical ventilation (using machines to help people breathe).
Many medical experts think Dr. Tobin is one of the best in his field. The American Thoracic Society, a big group of lung doctors, calls him a "supreme scholar" because he has written many important textbooks. One of his books, Principles And Practice of Mechanical Ventilation, is even called the "Bible" of mechanical ventilation by The Lancet, a famous medical journal. In 1994, he was chosen to be part of the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He also helped lead the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine as its editor from 1999 to 2004.

Important Discoveries
Dr. Tobin is famous for his research that helps doctors decide when a patient can stop using a breathing machine.
The Rapid Shallow Breathing Index
In 1991, Dr. Tobin and Karl L. Yang published an important study. They described a new way to measure how well a patient might breathe on their own. This measurement is called the rapid shallow breathing index (RSBI). It was first known as the Yang Tobin Index (Y/T). This index helps doctors understand if a patient's lungs are strong enough to breathe without a ventilator. They also described another index called the CROP index.
