Martin Mayhew (born October 8, 1965) is an American football executive. He used to play as a cornerback in the National Football League (NFL). Currently, he works as a senior personnel executive for the Washington Commanders.
Mayhew played college football for the Florida State Seminoles. He was then picked by the Buffalo Bills in the 1988 NFL draft. After missing his first year due to an injury, he joined the Washington Redskins. With them, he won Super Bowl XXVI. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers before he stopped playing in 1996.
After his playing career, Mayhew earned a law degree in 2000. He worked in football administration for the XFL. Then, he joined the Detroit Lions in 2001. He became their general manager (GM) in 2008. He held this role until 2015. Later, he worked as a senior executive for the New York Giants and San Francisco 49ers. From 2021 to 2023, Mayhew was the GM for the Washington Commanders. In 2024, he became a senior personnel executive for the team.

Early Life and College Football
Martin Mayhew was born on October 8, 1965, in Daytona Beach, Florida. He went to Florida High School in Tallahassee. In 1983, he started college a year early at Florida State University.
At Florida State, he played 33 games as a cornerback for the Florida State Seminoles football team. He was also part of the track and field team. In 1985, he was named an Academic All-America player. This means he was excellent in both sports and school. He earned a degree in business management in 1987.

The Buffalo Bills drafted Mayhew in 1988. He was the 262nd player picked overall. During his first year, he hurt his wrist. This injury kept him from playing any games for the Bills.
The next year, he joined the Washington Redskins. He became a starter for them for four seasons. In 1991, he helped the Redskins win Super Bowl XXVI. This was a huge achievement for the team.
In 1993, Mayhew signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He played for them for four years. After the 1996 season, he decided to retire from playing football. He wanted to finish his law degree. He ended his playing career with 118 games played. He had 473 tackles, 21 interceptions, and 4 forced fumbles.
Working as an Executive

Personal Life
After college, Martin Mayhew briefly worked at a bank. While playing for the Redskins, he started taking night classes at Georgetown University Law Center. He had to stop when he moved to play for the Buccaneers.
After he retired from playing football in 1997, he went back to law school. He earned his law degree in 2000. Mayhew is a member of The Florida Bar, which means he is a licensed lawyer in Florida. He has also served on the boards of the Henry Ford Museum and the Detroit Police Athletic League (PAL).
