Fra' Martin de Redin (born in Pamplona, Spain, in 1579 – died in Malta, 1660) was an important Spanish leader. He was a military man and a politician. He became the 58th Grand Master of the Order of Malta, a famous group of knights.
Before becoming Grand Master, he held other important roles. He was a high-ranking member of the Order of Malta in Navarre starting in 1641. He also served as the Viceroy of Sicily in 1656, which meant he ruled Sicily for the King of Spain.
Becoming Grand Master
Martin de Redin was chosen as the Grand Master of the Knights Hospitaller in 1657. This happened after the previous Grand Master, Giovanni Paolo Lascaris, passed away. His new role meant he was the leader of the Knights of Malta.
Protecting Malta
During his time as Grand Master, Martin de Redin focused on keeping Malta safe. He ordered the building of 13 watch towers all around the coast of the island. These towers were very important for defense.
The towers helped create a communication system. People in one tower could signal to the next, quickly warning everyone about approaching pirates or other enemies. This helped protect the island from attacks.
Other Important Actions
De Redin also made sure Malta had a strong defense force. He created a special group of 4,000 musketeers. These were soldiers armed with muskets, which were a type of gun.
He also helped the people of Malta when they faced shortages. He arranged for food and other important supplies to be brought in from Sicily. This showed his care for the island and its people during difficult times.
