Marva Denise Hicks (born May 5, 1956 – died September 16, 2022) was a talented American singer and actress. She was known for her R&B music and her work on Broadway stages and in TV shows.
Marva Hicks: Her Life and Career
Marva Hicks was born and grew up in Petersburg, Virginia. She later went to college at Howard University.
Marva started her singing career in gospel music. In the 1980s, she began singing other types of music. Her most famous song was "Never Been in Love Before." This song became a big hit in 1991, reaching number seven on the R&B music charts.
On July 16, 1996, Marva sang with the famous artist Michael Jackson. This was at a free concert in Brunei. The concert celebrated the 50th birthday of the Sultan of Brunei. Marva sang the female part of the duet "I Just Can't Stop Loving You" with Michael Jackson. She also sang backup for him during his "HIStory World Tour."
Marva was also a successful actress on Broadway, which is a famous theater district in New York City. She played Rafiki in the musical The Lion King. She was also an understudy for the main actress. This means she learned the role and could perform it if the main actress was unable to.
Her other Broadway shows included Motown: The Musical and Lena Horne, The Lady and Her Music. Marva won the Helen Hayes Award three times for her amazing work on stage. This award celebrates excellence in Washington, D.C. theater.
On television, Marva played T'Pel, the wife of a character named Tuvok, in two episodes of Star Trek: Voyager. She also had many other roles in different TV shows. She sang a gospel song called "There's No Hiding Place Down Here" in an episode of Babylon 5.
In 2013, Marva Hicks was featured on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs' album Mosquito. She sang with a group called Broadway Inspirational Voices on the song "Sacrilege".
Marva Hicks passed away in New York City on September 16, 2022. She was 66 years old.
