Marvin Larry Benard (born January 20, 1971) is a baseball manager and former outfielder. He played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the San Francisco Giants. He has also managed the Nicaraguan national team. More recently, he managed Gigantes de Rivas in the 2024 Caribbean Series.
About Marvin Benard
Marvin Benard moved to Los Angeles with his parents when he was 12 years old. He played baseball in high school at Bell High School. After high school, he attended different colleges to continue playing baseball. These included El Camino College and L.A. Harbor Junior College. He then went to Lewis-Clark State College.
Marvin's son, Isaac, also plays baseball. Isaac was chosen by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 2016 baseball draft. He played for the Princeton Rays team.
Marvin Benard is also related to actor Maurice Benard. Maurice is his cousin.
Playing in Major League Baseball
Marvin Benard played for the San Francisco Giants from 1995 to 2003. He was a regular player from 1999 to 2001. He also played a lot in 1996 when another player was injured.
In 1999, Marvin won the Willie Mac Award. This award is given to a Giants player who shows great spirit and leadership. During the 2000 playoffs, Marvin had a very important hit. He helped his team score a run in a key game.
Marvin was known for hitting the ball with good power, especially for a leadoff hitter. He could also steal bases. He played in all three outfield positions, but mostly as a center fielder. Marvin hit the very last home run for the San Francisco Giants at their old stadium, Candlestick Park.
After leaving the Giants in 2003, Marvin played for a short time in the minor leagues. He signed with the Chicago White Sox and then the Toronto Blue Jays. He played one season for the Triple-A Syracuse Chiefs before ending his playing career.
After His Playing Career
After retiring as a player, Marvin Benard became a coach. In 2015, he worked as a hitting coach for the San Diego Padres' minor league team, the Tri-City Dust Devils.
In 2016, he became the manager for the Nicaragua national baseball team. Today, he also works as a color commentator for the Giants' Spanish-language radio broadcasts. He helps describe the games for fans listening on the radio.
Marvin Benard also managed the Gigantes de Rivas team in the 2024 Caribbean Series. This team had won the championship in Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan team finished the tournament in last place.
