Mary Ellen Hinamon Withrow (born October 2, 1930) is an American activist and former politician. She served as the 40th Treasurer of the United States from 1994 to 2001. She worked under President Bill Clinton.
As Treasurer, she was in charge when the designs of the $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills were updated in the 1990s.

Mary Ellen Withrow's Life Story
Mary Ellen Withrow was born in Marion County, Ohio. She started her public service career in 1969. She was the first woman elected to the Elgin Local School Board in Marion County.
Serving as Treasurer
Withrow was elected Treasurer of her home county, Marion County, Ohio, in 1976 and 1980. After that, she became the Treasurer of Ohio. She won this election in 1982, 1986, and 1990.
She is the only person ever to have been a treasurer at all three levels of government: local (county), state, and national. As Ohio's Treasurer, she started new programs. She also helped the state earn record amounts of money. She was known for managing things very well.
Other Roles in Government
In 1992, Withrow was a Presidential Elector for Ohio. This means she was part of the group that officially votes for the President. She also attended the 2000 Democratic National Convention and the 2004 Democratic National Convention. These are big meetings where political parties choose their presidential candidates.
Awards and Honors
Mary Ellen Withrow has received many awards. One important award is the Donald L. Scantlebury Memorial Award. She got this award for making financial management better in government.
In 1990, City & State Newspaper named her the nation's "Most Valuable State Public Official." She has also led several groups related to treasury work. These include the National Association of State Treasurers.
Working for Women
Withrow is a strong supporter of women in government. She is on the board of directors for Women Executives in State Government. She is also part of the Ohio Women's Hall of Fame. She even received a special fellowship to study at Harvard University.
After she retired in 2001, Withrow became involved with the U.S. Treasury's historical society. Her personal documents, photos, and awards are kept at the Marion County Historical Society in Marion, Ohio.
Her Legacy
In September 2019, the Marion City Schools announced a special honor for Mary Ellen Withrow. They decided to name two new schools after her: the Mary Ellen Withrow Middle School Academy and the Mary Ellen Withrow High School Academy. This shows how much her community values her contributions.
