Mary Catherine McCormack, born on February 8, 1969, is an American actress. She has played many important roles in TV shows and movies.
You might know her as Justine Appleton from the series Murder One. She also played Kate Harper on The West Wing. Later, she was Deputy U.S. Marshal Mary Shannon on In Plain Sight. More recently, she starred as Peggy in the comedy series The Kids Are Alright.
Mary McCormack has also been in several films. These include Private Parts, Deep Impact, and K-PAX. She also appeared in the movie 1408.

Mary McCormack's Early Life
Mary McCormack was born in Plainfield, New Jersey. Her mother, Norah, was a therapist. Her father, William, owned a car dealership and an ice cream shop. Her parents divorced in 1990.
Mary has a sister named Bridget. Bridget was a chief justice for the Michigan Supreme Court. Mary's brother, William, is also an actor, writer, and producer. He even appeared with Mary in In Plain Sight.
In 1987, Mary finished high school at the Wardlaw-Hartridge School. She then went to Trinity College in Connecticut. In 1991, she earned her degree in comparative arts. She studied painting and creative writing there.
Mary McCormack's Acting Career
Mary McCormack started acting when she was just 12 years old. Her first performance was in a Christmas opera called Amahl and the Night Visitors. She continued acting in musicals and studied at the William Esper Studio. She also performed in many theater shows in New York.
Early TV and Film Roles
From 1995 to 1997, Mary played Justine Appleton on the TV show Murder One. She also starred in the HBO series K Street. In 1997, she was in the movie Private Parts.
In 2004, Mary joined the cast of The West Wing. She played Kate Harper, a Deputy National Security Advisor. Her character became a regular part of the show for its last three seasons.
Starring in In Plain Sight
Mary McCormack was the main star of the USA Network series In Plain Sight. She played Mary Shannon, a U.S. Marshal. Her character worked for the Federal Witness Security Program, also known as WITSEC. This program protects witnesses who are in danger.
The show was very popular and ran for five seasons. It ended in 2012. After In Plain Sight finished, Mary was chosen to star in a new comedy pilot for ABC.
Theater and Guest Appearances
In 2008, Mary was nominated for a Tony Award. This award is for excellent performances in Broadway plays. She was recognized for her role as Gretchen in the play Boeing Boeing.
Mary also appeared as a guest seven times on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson. During one visit, she gave the host, Craig Ferguson, a special coffee mug. It was shaped like a rattlesnake. Craig promised to use it on all his future shows, and he did!
Recent Projects
In 2012, Mary reunited with the cast of The West Wing. They filmed a video to encourage people to vote. The video also supported her sister Bridget's successful campaign for the Michigan State Supreme Court.
In 2013, Mary started filming a movie called The Crash. It was released in 2017. In 2016, she had a supporting role in the Amazon special An American Girl Story – Maryellen 1955: Extraordinary Christmas.
From 2018 to 2019, Mary starred in the ABC sitcom The Kids Are Alright. She played Peggy Cleary, a Catholic mother. The show ran for one season. In 2021, Mary began starring in the Starz drama Heels. She played Willie Day, a business partner. This series ran for two seasons.
Mary McCormack's Personal Life
In July 2003, Mary McCormack married Michael Morris. He is a director and producer. They have three children together.
Mary and Michael are also executive producers for the game show 25 Words or Less. The show is hosted by Meredith Vieira. Mary often appears on the show as a celebrity panelist.
Mary McCormack is the godmother to her In Plain Sight co-star Fred Weller's daughter.
