Mary McNair Mathews (1834–1903) was an important historian who wrote about the state of Nevada. She is best known for her book, Ten Years in Nevada or Life on the Pacific Coast, which was published in 1880. This book tells the story of her life in Virginia City, Nevada, and gives us a look into what life was like there a long time ago.
Early Life and Moving West
Mary McNair Mathews was born in Livingston County, New York, in 1834. When she was younger, she faced a difficult time as her husband passed away. Later, she learned that her brother had also died in Virginia City, Nevada.
In 1869, Mary decided to make a big change. She sold her factory, which made hoop skirts (a type of clothing popular back then), and traveled all the way to Nevada with her young son. She wanted to be closer to where her brother had lived.
Life in Virginia City
Once Mary arrived in Virginia City, she was very busy and worked hard. She started several different businesses to support herself and her son.
- She ran a laundry business, washing clothes for people.
- She also opened a school, helping children learn.
- Mary managed a boardinghouse, which was like a small hotel where people could rent rooms.
- She even ran a soup kitchen, providing food for those who needed it.

Later Years and Legacy
Mary McNair Mathews returned to New York in 1878. Two years later, in 1880, she published her famous book, Ten Years in Nevada or Life on the Pacific Coast. This book shared her experiences and observations from her time living in Nevada.
After her book was published, Mary moved back to the West to be with her son. She passed away in Ukiah, California, in 1903.
Even many years after her death, Mary McNair Mathews's life and work are still remembered. In 2009, a special event called a chautauqua was held about her life. This event took place at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park in Minden, Nevada, celebrating her contributions to Nevada's history.
