Making the Music for Mary Poppins Returns
The talented composer Marc Shaiman and lyricist Scott Wittman started working on the music in 2016. They wrote nine brand-new songs just for the film. In 2018, one of their songs, "The Place Where Lost Things Go", was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Song. The movie's background music was also nominated for Best Original Score.
The music in Mary Poppins Returns also includes nods to the first Mary Poppins movie. You might hear parts of classic songs like "A Spoonful of Sugar", "The Perfect Nanny", "Feed The Birds", and "Let's Go Fly a Kite". Richard M. Sherman, who helped write the songs for the original film, was a music consultant for this new movie. Marc Shaiman said that Sherman really liked what he heard and loved the new film.
Two songs from the soundtrack were released early. On November 26, 2018, fans could hear "The Place Where Lost Things Go" sung by Emily Blunt. They could also hear "Trip a Little Light Fantastic" sung by Lin-Manuel Miranda and other cast members.
Not every song recorded for a movie makes it into the final film. For example, the song "Theme from Mary Poppins Returns" was used in the movie's trailers but not in the film itself. Another song, "The Anthropomorphic Zoo", was planned for a scene but was removed before the cast recorded it. You can find a demo version of this song with storyboard pictures as a bonus on the home video release of the movie.
