Emily Kathleen Anne Mortimer (born on 6 October 1971) is a talented British actress and filmmaker. She started her acting journey on stage and has since appeared in many movies and TV shows.
Emily won an Independent Spirit Award in 2003 for her role in the movie Lovely and Amazing. She is also well-known for playing Mackenzie McHale in the HBO TV series The Newsroom (2012–2014).
She also created and wrote the series Doll & Em (2014–2015). Later, she wrote and directed the TV miniseries The Pursuit of Love (2021). This work earned her a nomination for a British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Emily has lent her voice to characters like Sophie in the English version of Howl's Moving Castle (2004). She has also starred in popular films such as Scream 3 (2000), Match Point (2005), The Pink Panther (2006), The Pink Panther 2 (2009), Lars and the Real Girl (2007), Shutter Island (2010), Cars 2 (2011), Hugo (2011), and Mary Poppins Returns (2018).

Early Life and School
Emily Mortimer was born in Hammersmith, London, on 6 October 1971. Her father was a famous writer and lawyer named Sir John Mortimer. Her mother was Penelope. Emily has a younger sister, Rosie, and several half-siblings.
She went to St Paul's Girls' School in London, where she acted in many school plays. After that, she studied Russian at Lincoln College at the University of Oxford. She continued to perform in plays there. Before becoming a full-time actress, Emily wrote articles for The Daily Telegraph newspaper.
Acting Career
Starting Out (1995–2008)
Emily Mortimer began acting in plays while she was at the University of Oxford. A TV producer saw her in a student play and offered her a main role in a TV show called The Glass Virgin (1995). She then appeared in other TV shows like Sharpe's Sword (1995) and Coming Home (1998).
In 1996, Emily made her first movie appearance in The Ghost and the Darkness. She also appeared in The Last of the High Kings. In 1997, she played Katherine Lacey in the first episode of the TV series Midsomer Murders. She was also in the movie Elizabeth (1998) and the TV mini-series Cider with Rosie.
In 1999, Emily had three movie roles. She was the "Perfect Girl" in Notting Hill, Esther in the TV mini-series Noah's Ark, and Angelina in Scream 3.
In 2000, Emily was cast in the musical movie Love's Labour's Lost. This is where she met her future husband, actor Alessandro Nivola. She also had a big role in the American film Disney's The Kid, starring alongside Bruce Willis.
A year later, she played Elizabeth in Lovely & Amazing, a comedy about a mother and her three daughters. Emily won an Independent Spirit Award for Best Supporting Actress for her role in this movie. In 2002, she played an assassin in The 51st State (also known as Formula 51), with Samuel L. Jackson.

Emily Mortimer played a police detective named Alice Frampton in the movie Harry Brown (2009). To prepare for the role, she spent time with a real female detective.
She also appeared in City Island (2009) as an aspiring actress. In 2010, she was in Martin Scorsese's thriller Shutter Island, which was a box office success. She also played American educator Leonie Gilmour in the movie Leonie (2010), showing her wide range as an actress.

Personal Life
Emily Mortimer met American actor Alessandro Nivola in 2000 while they were both working on the movie Love's Labour's Lost. They got married on 3 January 2003.
They have two children: a son named Sam Nivola, born in 2003, and a daughter named May, born in 2010. The family lives in Boerum Hill, Brooklyn, in the United States. Emily became an American citizen in 2010.
