Emily Kathleen Anne Mortimer (born October 6, 1971) is a talented British and American actress and filmmaker. She started her career performing in plays on stage. Since then, she has appeared in many movies and TV shows.
In 2003, Emily won an Independent Spirit Award for her role in the movie Lovely and Amazing. She is also well-known for playing Mackenzie McHale in the TV series The Newsroom, which aired from 2012 to 2014. Emily also helped create and write the series Doll & Em (2014–2015). She wrote and directed the miniseries The Pursuit of Love in 2021, which earned her a nomination for a British Academy Television Award for Best Supporting Actress.
Emily has lent her voice to characters like Sophie in the English version of Howl's Moving Castle (2004). Emily Mortimer was born on October 6, 1971, in Hammersmith, London, England. Her father was Sir John Mortimer, a famous writer and lawyer. Her mother was Penelope Gollop. Emily has a younger sister named Rosie.
She attended St Paul's Girls' School in west London, where she acted in many school plays. Later, she went to the University of Oxford and studied Russian at Lincoln College. While there, she continued to perform in plays. Before becoming a full-time actress, she wrote articles for The Daily Telegraph newspaper.

Emily and Alessandro have two children: their son Sam Nivola, born in 2003, and their daughter May, born in 2010. The family lives in Brooklyn, New York. Emily became an American citizen in 2010.
