Her Early Life

Mary was born in Puvirnituq, Quebec. In 1943, she married Samuelie Pudlat on Baffin Island. For many years, they lived a semi-nomadic life. This means they moved around often, following animals and seasons. In 1963, Mary and Samuelie settled down in Cape Dorset.

Becoming an Artist

Mary Pudlat started to draw and sculpt in the 1960s and 1970s. She often used soapstone for her sculptures. Soapstone is a soft rock that is easy to carve. When her husband passed away in 1979, she began to focus on drawing full-time.

Her Unique Art

Mary Pudlat's art tells stories about her culture. She often drew scenes of daily Inuit life. This included traditional hunting and fishing practices. Her work helps us understand the rich history and traditions of the Inuit people.
