History of Marysville
Early Days and Growth
A post office was opened in Marysville in 1873. A post office is where you send and receive mail. It stayed open until the mid-1940s. The community was named Marysville either after Mary (Fitch) Corn, an early settler who arrived in 1867, or after her brother, R. A. Fitch, who came in 1869. He had lived in Marysville, California.
Richard Corn, Mary's husband, helped the community grow. He gave away land for businesses whenever a home lot was sold. By 1900, Marysville had two mercantile stores, which are like general stores. It also had places to process cotton called cotton gins, blacksmith shops where metal items were made, grocery stores, churches, and a drugstore. There was even a livery stable, which was a place to keep horses for rent or boarding. At this time, about 250 people lived in Marysville.
Changes Over Time
From 1925 until 1942, the town's population stayed steady at 160 people. However, things changed when Camp Howze, a military camp, was built nearby in northwest Cooke County. This construction caused many families living north, east, and south of Marysville to move out of the area.
Marysville was affected by the loss of these small family farms. By the late 1980s, only 70 residents lived there. The community had one church and no recorded businesses.
Notable Residents and Events
One of Marysville's most well-known residents was Daniel Montague. The nearby Montague County is named after him. He is buried in the Marysville Cemetery. In 2000, the population of Marysville was 15 people.
Marysville was also one of the places featured in the 1978 movie The Swarm. On May 7, 1995, a strong F3 tornado hit Marysville. On July 28, 1921, Marysville also had a branch of the Cooke County Library nearby, which meant people could borrow books.
