Maria Hilda Rodriguez Rodriguez (born May 10, 1955) is a celebrated boccia player from Spain. She is known for her amazing skill in the sport and for winning gold at the Paralympic Games.

Maria has a physical disability called cerebral palsy. This condition affects a person's ability to move and maintain balance. In boccia, athletes are classified based on their abilities to make the competition fair. Maria competed as a BC2 type athlete.

What is Boccia?

Boccia (pronounced bot-cha) is a precision ball sport, similar to bowls or pétanque. It was designed for athletes with severe physical disabilities, like cerebral palsy. The goal is to throw or roll leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball, called the "jack."

Players can throw, kick, or even use a ramp to move the balls. It is a sport that requires great skill, strategy, and focus. Boccia is played at the Paralympic Games, which is the biggest international sports event for athletes with disabilities.

Paralympic Success

Maria Rodriguez represented Spain at the 1996 Summer Paralympics in Atlanta, USA. She had an incredible performance and showed her talent to the world.

Gold Medal Victories

At the Atlanta Games, Maria competed in two events and won gold in both.

  • Teams Event: She was part of the Spanish team that won the gold medal in the BC1/BC2 team event. This victory was a result of great teamwork and skill.
  • Individual Event: Maria also competed on her own in the BC2 individual event. She played brilliantly and won another gold medal, becoming a double Paralympic champion.
