Masanori Sanada (真田 雅則, Sanada Masanori, March 6, 1968 – September 6, 2011) was a Japanese football player. He was a talented goalkeeper who played for two main clubs during his career: All Nippon Airways and Shimizu S-Pulse. He was known for his strong performances, especially with Shimizu S-Pulse, where he helped the team win important titles.

Playing Career Highlights

Masanori Sanada was born in Shizuoka, Japan, on March 6, 1968. After finishing his studies at Juntendo University, he began his professional football journey.

Early Club Days

In 1990, Sanada joined a team called All Nippon Airways. He quickly became their main goalkeeper right from his first season. He played many games for them, showing his skills early on.

Success with Shimizu S-Pulse

In 1992, Sanada moved to a new club, Shimizu S-Pulse, which was based in his hometown. He played in every match during his first year with the team. For a few years, he shared the goalkeeper spot with another player named Sidmar. But after Sidmar left in 1995, Sanada became the team's full-time starting goalkeeper.

His time at Shimizu S-Pulse was very successful:

  • In 1996, the club won its first major title, the 1996 J.League Cup.
  • In 1999, the team finished second in the J1 League, which is Japan's top football league. Sanada's excellent play earned him a spot in the "Best XI" team for that year, meaning he was one of the best players in the league.
  • The club also achieved success in Asia, winning the 1999–2000 Asian Cup Winners' Cup. This was their first Asian championship.

After 2001, Sanada played fewer games as younger goalkeepers like Keisuke Hada and Takaya Kurokawa started to take his place. He decided to retire from playing football at the end of the 2004 season.

National Team Experience

In 1988, while still a student at Juntendo University, Sanada was chosen to play for the Japan national "B team". This team played in the 1988 AFC Asian Cup. He played in three games during this competition. However, the Japan Football Association does not count these matches as official games for the main Japan national team, because it was a "B team" and not the "top team."

Life After Playing: Coaching Career

After retiring as a player, Sanada continued his involvement in football as a coach.

  • In 2005, he became a goalkeeper coach for his former club, Shimizu S-Pulse.
  • In 2008, he moved to coach at another club, JEF United Chiba.
  • In 2011, he returned to Shimizu S-Pulse.

Sadly, Masanori Sanada had to take a break from coaching due to health problems starting on September 2, 2011. He passed away shortly after, on September 6, 2011, in Shizuoka, at the age of 43, due to heart failure.
